Hardy Living Stone (Aloinopsis)

1" tall x 4-5" wide. A remarkable succulent species from the high, cold plateau of the Eastern Cape state of South Africa, Aloinopsis spathulata blooms in mid-spring with big, showy nickel-sized flowers that poke up through its unique clam-shell shaped leaves. Very difficult to find in the wild, as it is unfortunately a favorite of the domesticated goats that graze in its habitat. A dependably cold hardy plant in horticulturist David Salman's Santa Fe rock garden, it has an enormous taproot that is best wedged between two deep rocks at planting time. Good for Firescaping
