FREEDA® Caterpillar Grass
Harpochloa falx 'Compact Black' FREEDA® (Caterpillar Grass) is a distinctive ‘tussock’ (tight clump-forming) grass with flowers that unfurl above the foliage, forming playful loops that turn into fuzzy-looking eyebrows. Evergreen needle-like grass turns to an impressive dark cocoa color in winter, adding year-round visual interest.
Native to South Africa, FREEDA® Caterpillar Grass is ideal for the North American steppe region. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in full to partial sun with average to well-draining soil. Low maintenance and easy to grow, Harpochloa falx requires very little water once established and is resistant to pests and disease. Cut back foliage at the end of winter.
When planted individually, FREEDA®’s rounded form makes a handsome specimen plant. Planting in groups provides structure and the grassy clumps are particularly striking when interspersed with other garden perennials. Pairs well with Succulents, Kniphofia, Artemisia and Partridge Feather.
