Showy 'Big News' Oriental Lily (Lilium orientalis) has it all with towering stems and white trumpet-shaped flowers. Plant them in a full sun location in well-draining soil – they won’t tolerate soggy roots.Add some compost or organic fertilizer when planting. A good way to grow ‘Big News’ is to let it grow up among other perennials or shrubs, so that its root area is shady and moist while its blooms can have 6-8 hours of sun per day. This also gives the large plant support and makes for a wonderful summer surprise when they flower. Great in containers too, they don’t mind crowding and will scent an entire patio or deck with sweet perfume. Long-lasting as cut flowers, pick them when the buds are colored, and the bottom flower is just beginning to open. Snip out the stamens so they don’t stain your tablecloth.
